How healing "the man in the bed" became a humanitarian joint effort between orthopedic surgeons all around the world

I feel so honored to bring Dr. Lewis Zirkle onto today's episode of the podcast! Dr. Zirkle is the president and founder of the nonprofit, Sign Fracture Care International. SIGN is a humanitarian organization that brings sustainable orthopedic care to low and middle income countries by providing education to trauma surgeons as well as manufacturing and donating instruments and implants that are needed to treat fractures.

During this episode, we talk about…

  • How road traffic accidents create a higher mortality rate than HIV, Malaria, and TB combined

  • How Dr. Zirkle, as a commanding officer in the army in Vietnam, began his journey in creating SIGN

  • The "man in the bed" who represents poor patients with broken bones who have no money to pay for surgeries

  • How Dr. Zirkle went to several medical device companies to ask for help in donating essential medical equipment to help these patients

  • And much more!
