Creating Salamat - Afghanistan's first health tech application

On this episode, I have a conversation with an old friend of mine, Alia Rasoully. By night, she is the Executive Director and Founder of the Non-Profit called Wise Afghanistan. During the day, she is the Strategic Planning Manager for the healthcare company, Blue Shield of California.

Wise (Womens Initiative to Strengthen and Empower) Afghanistan is an organization is dedicated to providing women and children in Afghanistan with access to healthcare and education. Wise has served over 8,000 beneficiaries since 2013 and has been recognized nationally and internationally for work towards women empowerment. Alia and her team developed the first ever healthcare technology application and are focused on decreasing maternal mortality rates in Afghanistan.

During this conversation we speak about how we got to know each other way back during our college days. We talk about the first trip she made to afghanistan and how it fueled her desire to serve the women and children there. We speak about how healthcare is currently structured in afghanistan for women and children. We speak about how every 27 minutes a woman in afghanistan will die from childbirth. And we talk about how an idea for a maternal health application came to life - Salamat. - The first healthcare technology application ever created within afghanistan.

During this episode, we talk about…

  • How Alia and I met way back during our college days

  • The first trip Alia had made to Afghanistan and how it fueled her desire to serve the women and children there.

  • The current structure of healthcare for women and children in Afghanistan

  • How an idea for a maternal health application called Salamat was born and how it is serving not only mothers and children of Afghanistan but also their healthcare providers.

  • and much more…
