37. What is Giving Tuesday?

The concept of collective giving has long been a driving force in the world of philanthropy. Harnessing this power to create meaningful change is a topic that's close to our hearts here at the Global Health Pursuit. In this enlightening episode, we delve deep into the story of Giving Tuesday - a global philanthropic movement designed to counter the rampant consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This episode uncovers how this annual event has become a launchpad for non-profit organizations to amplify their missions, draw support, and inspire a culture of giving back.

Giving Tuesday, founded in 2012 in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation, was the brainchild of Henry Timbs, then executive director of the 92nd Street Y in New York City. It was conceived as a counterpoint to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, aiming to shift interests from selfish desires to selfless actions such as charitable giving and altruism. The movement gained traction almost immediately and evolved into a global phenomenon, demonstrating a surge in generosity, providing a platform for nonprofits to gain visibility and cultivate a culture that encourages philanthropy.

Throughout the episode, we highlight three exemplary global health organizations: Extra Mile Pediatrics, GOHE, and Sign Fracture Care International. These organizations deserve recognition for their efforts to improve global health equity. Extra Mile Pediatrics is committed to serving children in vulnerable areas around the world, providing critical healthcare services. GOHE focuses on educating individuals about neuroscience and neurological conditions like epilepsy, while Sign Fracture Care International designs and manufactures trauma medical devices for low and middle-income surgical settings.

In addition to highlighting these organizations, the episode also spotlights the incredible work of three health equity organizations: Extra Miles Pediatrics, GOHE, and Sign Fracture Care. These organizations have distinctive approaches to uplifting vulnerable communities, providing much-needed health services and education. Each organization's mission underscores the importance of finding a cause that resonates with you, whether you're donating your time or your resources.

Finally, the episode emphasizes the far-reaching impact of individual contributions. The collective giving power of Giving Tuesday has helped non-profits to gain visibility and support, fostering a culture of philanthropy. By tuning into this episode, listeners can gain a deeper understanding of health equity and philanthropy, while also discovering potential organizations to support.

So whether it's Giving Tuesday or any other day of the year, we encourage our listeners to consider supporting these organizations or others that align with their passions. Remember, every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant impact in someone's life. By giving back, we can help to foster a more compassionate society and contribute to the global health together.
