39. Obstetric Fistula: One Surgery to Transform a Woman’s Life

In this podcast episode, we delve into the complex and often overlooked world of obstetric fistula. We are joined by Jesse Chu, the senior program manager at Fistula Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing life-changing fistula surgery to women who cannot afford it.

Jesse's personal journey into the world of
obstetric fistula began during her tenure as a community health organizer with the Peace Corps in Ethiopia. She discovered the devastating effects of this health condition through the documentary "A Walk to Beautiful," which portrays the journey of five women with fistula as they seek treatment at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital.

The Fistula Foundation plays a pivotal role in communities where the incidence of obstetric fistula is high. They build trust, direct women to the right care, and have created a growing network of dedicated surgeons known as the Fistula Foundation Treatment Network. The foundation works tirelessly to ensure that women have access to the necessary surgery and post-operative care.

One of the most significant aspects of the foundation's work is funding surgeries for women who cannot afford them. Through partnerships with local organizations and community outreach, the foundation spreads awareness about free treatment options and supports the training of surgeons and health providers. They have established treatment networks in countries like Kenya, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania to strengthen the referral system between facilities.

The Fistula Foundation also aims to address the immense need for obstetric care in these regions despite the challenges. The importance of a well-trained health provider team for successful surgical outcomes cannot be overstated. They are making a significant difference with the help of over a hundred talented surgeons.

The Fistula Foundation was founded in 2000 to support the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. It has since expanded its mission to support fistula care worldwide and has partnered with 77 organizations, treating over 80,000 patients since 2009. The foundation has an ambitious strategic plan to treat another 80,000 patients in the next five years and to launch treatment networks in four more countries.

One of the most effective tools in the foundation's arsenal is their documentary, which follows the journey of a woman in Kenya living with fistula. It showcases the challenges she faces in accessing medical care, shedding light on the lived experiences of these women. The documentary is a powerful reminder of the importance of the foundation's work and the impact it has on the lives of women living with obstetric fistula.

The Fistula Foundation is a beacon of hope for women suffering from obstetric fistula. Their mission to provide access to quality surgical care and their dedication to breaking down barriers in obstetric fistula care is truly commendable. By supporting their work, we can help them in their mission to empower women and improve health outcomes in some of the most vulnerable communities worldwide.
